Alcester London House Club History

A Brief History of the Conservative Club Inauguration

A meeting was held on 18th October 1926 where it was proposed that a club be formed that shall be called The Alcester Conservative Club Ltd with registered offices in High Street, Alcester.

At the same meeting Lord Henry Seymour was elected President of the Club.

Up until this time the only meeting place for social recreational activities was the front room of 49, High Street, which was known as the Reading Room. The Reading Room was relatively small and so provided inadequate space.

London House, previously a café, was bought for £400 at auction and work was started on alterations.

By the end of January 1927, the Club had been registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act and accepted for membership by the Association of Conservative Clubs.

A billiard table was purchased for £52, and the following drinks were made available:

Bitter beer 7d a pint, mild beer 6d a pint, brandy 9d a glass, gin 6.5d and whisky and rum 7d.

By the end of February 1927 membership had increased to 112 members and the Club was officially opened by the President Colonel Lord Henry Seymour, D.S.O, J.P., of Park Hall on Wednesday 9th March 1927.
